Depth Psychology

Depth psychology is a branch of psychology that explores the hidden layers of the human psyche—especially the unconscious forces that shape our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Depth psychology looks beyond surface symptoms to uncover underlying patterns and unresolved conflicts.

The image of an iceberg is often used to illustrate this idea: what we see above the surface represents conscious awareness, while the much larger mass beneath the water symbolizes the unconscious. Depth psychology incorporates elements such as dreams, archetypes, and symbolic meanings. Rather than focusing only on what we are aware of, depth psychology is interested in what lives beneath awareness and holds the belief that humans are more complex than how they might appear.
